Every Sunday, I’m planning to post a short list of interesting blog posts, reviews and articles I spotted around the web. This obviously won’t be a comprehensive news round-up — if you’re looking for that, I recommend SF Signal‘s daily Tidbits posts. Instead, I’m just planning to post links to a few articles that I considered particularly interesting or well-written.
First up, here’s an insightful Tor.com post by Jo Walton about one of my favorite science fiction series, the Miles Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. This week was Military SF Week over at Tor.com, so Jo’s looking at the series from that perspective. (By the way, a while back we did a year-long group discussion about the series over at Beyond Reality, the reading group that inspired the name of this site. If you’re a fan of Miles, come by and say hi.)
Next up, Jeff VanderMeer wrote a wonderful post entitled Things I Know? with a number of insights that may be useful for new authors. I’m not an author, but I’m including the link here because those same ideas can also apply to the blogging world…
Aidan over at A Dribble of Ink wrote a wonderful, detailed review of Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed. I was eagerly awaiting this novel and planning to review it myself, but I’ll have a hard time topping Aidan’s review!
My buddy Justin Landon, of the excellent SF&F blog Staffer’s Musings, posted a great interview with John Love, whose debut novel Faith was published earlier this month. I’ll post a review of Faith here in the course of next week. (On a side-note, Justin designed the Far Beyond Reality logo banner you see at the top of every page here. Thanks, Justin!)
File under Spreading the Word: Tor.com mentioned Far Beyond Reality in one of its Morning Roundup posts, and SF Signal did the same in not one but two of their Daily Tidbits lists. Thanks, guys!
Last up, here’s a review by Charles Tan of what looks like really a fun anthology, Under the Moons of Mars edited by John Joseph Adams. This sounds like a great bunch of stories, and I still have to read a J.J. Adams anthology I didn’t like, so this one is going on my already teetering to-be-read pile. Okay, piles.
What to expect next week at Far Beyond Reality: why, some brand new reviews, of course! I will have a review of Seven Princes by John R. Fultz ready to go in the next day or two. I will also post my review of Faith by John Love (see above), and a review of a fantasy novel by one of my all-time favorite authors, Janny Wurts. And further down the line, I’m hoping to set up some giveaways…
And that’s it for Week One here at Far Beyond Reality! I’m obviously still working out the kinks here, so I’d like to thank my early visitors for their patience during these early days. If you’ve enjoyed the site so far, please tell a friend. And if you have any feedback or suggestions, feel free to let me know!
